Over 200,000 people migrate to Kobanê

NEWS CENTER - Following the attacks on North and East Syria, approximately 200,000 people from over 70 different centres have been relocated to Kobanê.

Since the attacks on North and East Syria began, people have been forced to migrate to safe areas. Approximately 200,000 people have been placed in over 70 different centres in Kobanê.

Ehmed Xoce, Co-Chair of the Labour and Social Affairs Committee, spoke to Fırat News Ageny (ANF) on the matter. Xoce said: "Following waves of attacks on cities in North and East Syria, large waves of migration headed for Kobanê. After the attacks on the Şêxmeqsûd (Sheikh Maqsoud) and Eşrefiyê (Ashrafiah) neighbourhoods began, people from both neighbourhoods and all other areas attacked by gangs were forced to come to Kobanê. Currently, those who have migrated are struggling to survive in critical conditions. They have been placed in schools, universities, mosques, wedding halls, academies and many other different places. In Kobanê, almost every house is home to four or five families living together."

Xoce drew attention to the situation of the migrants, saying, "Hundreds of thousands of people are sheltering in the city of Kobanê. Despite the snow, rain and cold weather conditions, the people are trying to continue their lives as best they can. We are currently trying to ascertain the exact number of migrants here, but according to estimates, the number has exceeded 200,000. Because Kobanê is under siege, those who have migrated are deprived of many basic necessities. Some necessities are being delivered through smuggling routes, but prices have increased two or threefold."

Xoce stated that the homes and properties of those forced to flee are being looted. "These refugees' homes and properties are being looted, their belongings stolen, and some homes burned down. We have documents confirming this situation. We have held numerous meetings with the Aleppo Governorate and have made efforts to enable the displaced persons to return to their homes, but so far, no results have been achieved. On the contrary, some people are settling in these homes, destroying them, looting them, and burning them. If this situation and the siege continue, a serious humanitarian disaster could occur. As the Labour and Social Affairs Committee, we will stand by our displaced people until the end," he said.
