NEWS CENTER - The city of Kobanê, home to 600 thousand people, has been under heavy siege since 20 January. Health officials are concerned that major health problems will arise if medicines are not supplied.
Medicines, fuel and food are in short supply in Kobanê, which has been under siege for 14 days. Despite days of power cuts and other hardships, the people are protecting their neighbourhoods and continuing their resistance.
Doctors in Kobanê report that due to the siege, some medicines cannot be obtained, particularly those used to treat chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and that cancer patients cannot leave the city for treatment. There are also serious difficulties in obtaining baby formula. Due to power cuts and fuel shortages, some sections of hospitals have been closed. Health officials emphasise that major health problems will arise if baby formula and medicines cannot be obtained.
The situation is similar in the markets and bazaars of Kobanê. Vegetables and basic foodstuffs have run out, and fuel used for heating and other needs cannot be obtained. Five children have lost their lives due to the cold weather in the siege, which threatens the lives of 600 thousand people. The danger to the people of Kobanê, especially children, continues.
