NEWS CENTER - "Öcalan’s freedom is a necessary condition for a political solution of the Kurdish question, which in turn will lead to the process of democratization of Turkey" said the final declaration of the conference held in Rome.
The "International Conference on Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan and Solution to the Kurdish Question" held in Rome, the capital of Italy, has ended. Many people from Europe, Africa, Latin America, Asia, Egypt, Turkey and Kurdistan participated in the conference. The final declaration of the conference was also announced.
FINAL DECLARATION
The Final Declaration reads: "The conference participants welcomed and supported Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan February 27 call for ‘Peace and a Democratic Society’. Furthermore, the PKK's 9th unilateral ceasefire was seen as a further commitment of the Kurdish side for peace.
However, the conference participants see the Turkish government's unwillingness to respond to Öcalan's call and the PKK's unilateral ceasefire to date as a cause for serious concern.
The current wave of arrests of mayors, journalists, lawyers, and peace activists in Turkey clearly shows the authoritarian course of the Turkish government. This development itself gives rise to great mistrust of political statements regarding the beginning of a period of peace.
Further, the Turkish military continues to attack the positions of the PKK guerrilla forces, and there have again been reports of the use of chemical weapons.
During the conference, the challenges and positive results of the last two years of the campaign were discussed in detail. The campaign, which has been carried out across continents with various political, legal and social activities, has led to political pressure on relevant international organizations such as the Council of Europe, the CPT and the Turkish government.
'CALL IS A CHANCE FOR PEACE'
Through these actions, Öcalan's ideas on democratic confederalism, women's liberation, new perspectives on ecology, diversity and coexistence have become a source of inspiration for societies around the world.
The struggle for Öcalan's freedom today has more of a chance to reach its aim due to Öcalan’s historical call for for peace and democratic society. Öcalan’s freedom is a necessary condition for a political solution of the Kurdish question, which in turn will lead to the process of democratization of Turkey.
The democratization of Turkey will encourage parallel positive changes in Syria, Rojava, Iraq, South Kurdistan, and the entire Middle East. At a time of political shifts to the right, where lawlessness, the destruction of ecology, and misogyny are on the rise at a global level, Öcalan sees an opportunity for peace in one of the most crisis-ridden regions in the Middle East through the power of society. His call is therefore addressed to us. Öcalan's call is a chance for peace in one of the most critical regions of the world such as the Middle East.
In order to enable the solution of the Kurdish question through the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan, the following proposals were put forward for implementation:
*Maximalizing and strengthening political pressure on European governments to ensure the Turkish government commits a serious and meaningful peace process, beginning with the liberation of Abdullah Öcalan.
*Expansion of initiatives to grant honorary citizenship to Öcalan worldwide, like in Italy.
*A Global Day of Action for the campaign Freedom for Öcalan – A Political Solution to the Kurdish Question” on September 1, World Peace Day, led by trade unions and wider social movements in capital cities.
*Organizing concerts and seminars for the Freedom of Öcalan
*Nomination of Öcalan for the Nobel Peace Prize"
